If you are looking for a great third party synth, you may be asking yourself, Is Serum Worth It? While it’s not astronomically priced, it does come in at just under 200 dollars, so you will want to know ahead of time if it will work for you
Key Features
Serum packs a ton of power is pretty lightweight and is extrememly intuitive.
One of the really nice things about it is that everything is right here on one screen. Not needing to switch between windows is a game-changer for sound design. Now, while there are other synths that I love working with that do have a ton of menus, I find that overall I tend to stay more focused while I am working in serum.
Wavetables Abound
While there is a staggering number of wavetables included in serum, There is also the ability to load in your own Wavetables, as well as to draw in your own waves.
The drawing feature pictured above gives you limitless potential for creation, while Serum’s ability to create wavetables from an audio file is exceptional, and far surpasses that of Ableton’s built-in wavetable as well as Arturia Pigments wave table.
Warp Modes
In addition to a high number of wavetables, and lots of user customization options, Serum also has several warp modes available which allow you to easily transform even simple waves into complex-sounding patches. As a bonus, it allows you to visually see what the warp modes are doing to the waveforms; this is helpful for understanding what you are doing as well as providing a way of connecting more deeply with the synth.
Would I Recommend It?
Absolutely, yes. Serum is absolutely above and beyond worth the money, and then some. If you are looking for a great wavetable synth, packed with lots of customization options, look no further.
